 REDDIT ME:

  Little Fish. A spoken nature poem for kids by Australian poet Graeme King - showing a fish and the struggle with the wily fisherman. ©kingpoetry2007.

LITTLE FISH

If I was a little fish I’d have a happy life

no fisherman would catch me out to take home to his wife.

Before I ate my breakfast I’d have a real close look,

and make sure that my tasty dish did not include a hook.

If I was in a river, I’d swim around, you bet!

But I’d be watching, while I play, for any closing net.

On sunny days I’d lie and bask or play in seaside foam,

but any splash of human feet would make me swim for home.

I’d always watch for fishing lines, for sinkers and for floats,

and I’d be swimming nowhere near the harbours full of boats;

I’d keep away from swimming holes, of beaches I’d stay clear,

and you would never find me hiding underneath the pier.

I’d test each mouthful that I ate, and make sure it was real,

for sometimes lovely tasty things are hiding hard, sharp steel;

yes, if I was a little fish, I’d see no frying pan,

for I’d be ever-watchful for the crafty fisherman.
