Should I dare to
try and paint your portrait
All my callow daubs
would be in vain;
No-one Earthly can
portray an angel
How can one draw
hair that falls like rain?
Could my heart
bleed ochre on my palette?
Paint the arms that
cling to me so tight?
Skin as soft as
roses in the morning,
Hue’d like
moonglow’s shadows in the night.
Lips that I must
speak of in a whisper,
Soft as cream yet
turbid as the sea;
Two small scarlet
steps that lead to heaven,
Thank my Gods that
they are true to me.
Could I hope to
show your eyes in love glow
Shining with the
gleam from passion’s light?
These are secrets
only you and I know
Surely no brush
stroke could paint it right.
Sadly, I can see
that I’m unworthy,
Burn my canvas, set
my brush alight;
Pen is all I need
to anthem you, love,
I shall paint you
in the words I write.
