FOREST LOVE

The sun came out from hiding and smiled down upon the scene,

Your hair lit up with golden rays of light;

You and I, the forest, and a leafy trail of green,

Hand in hand, and everything was right.

A fat and funny kookaburra full of ribald laughter

Brayed his joyous message to the wood;

Told the world that we would have a happy ever after,

Somehow all the forest understood.

We found a secret grotto, where the wild orchids play,

And watched a lizard yawning on a stone;

I waved my gnarled scepter and declared a holiday,

A laughing King upon a tree-trunk throne.

We gazed at willy-wagtails, little jump-jets in the air,

Feasting on our wake of gnats and flies;

A magic ring of mushrooms made you stop and sit and stare,

Hearing far-off fairy lullabies.

In a tree trunk, stagnant water, lined with lichen green,

Water-striders skated out their dance;

I pointed out Atlantis with a tadpole for a Queen,

And you were mesmerized in smiling trance.

Bush bees buzzed a jasmine vine that climbed a timber tower,

Black from lightning flash one fateful day;

The devastation gave us proof of Mother Nature’s power,

Power to grow and right to take away.

Dead gums gestured heavenward, against the eggshell sky,

Hieroglyphic timber tales of grace;

We lay on plush-pile grass and pondered on the puffy clouds,

And laughed when we could recognize a face.

A dried-up creek held random pools of fun and fascination,

As we approached frogs dived from leafy towers;

Each pool was such a vibrant, lively underwater nation

We could have stayed and watched the scene for hours.

I kidded that acacia was the same as mistletoe,

And stole a kiss beneath a wattle tree;

Your skin was warm, our hearts were young, and love had room to grow,

We knew today would live in memory.

The shadows lengthened, slowly and reluctantly the day

Succumbed as twilight shadowed skies above;

The sun beamed out his blessing with his final sunset ray,

The forest was a perfect place for love.
