THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY

A rather sad poem that uses fishing references to show how relationships can lose their shine. A family poem.

Swordfish on the menu in our restaurant of dreams?

Time and tide have beached a seafood banquet, so it seems;

Clam up tight and keep that pearl inside your oyster heart,

Shipwrecked on a sunken shoal, not listed on the chart.

Diving down, I try to locate cupid’s treasure chest,

Armed with but a faded map of long-gone love confessed;

Caught in rips of apathy, I’m dragged into the deep,

Drowning in the ocean of the tears I watch you weep.

Hooking into hope I try and land the fighting foe,

Screaming reel cries “yes” but as the line runs out it’s “no”

Spooled again, I sit on shore as sunlight fades to gray,

Staring out to sea and catching dreams of yesterday.
